From Interview:
In the interview, Emanuel was questioned whether participants in the proposed force would live in barracks.
“Somewhere between the age of 18 to 25 you will do three months of training. You can do it at some point in your college time,” he said. “There can be nothing wrong with all Americans having a joint, similar experience of what we call civil defense training or civil service.”
Emanuel said the planned requiring service “will give people a sense of what it means to be an American.”
He said, of course, the plan at that point was flexible.
“We propose three months [but] at the end of the day [if] someone says it should be four … I’m not going sit here and hold up [plans],” Emanuel said.
When the reporter questioned the commitment, Emanuel responded, “Guess what. We have a lot more challenges. We are going to need a lot to do it. If you’re worried about are you going to have to do 50 jumping jacks the answer is yes.”

From what I understand this is not military training. It looks like if this happens it will be community service type stuff which a lot of schools do already, this would just make it mandatory. Hell I don’t have a problem if I need to go help out my town for a few months.

Listen, this is coming from a guy who neither voted for Barack nor likes his economic policies, but for once I agree with him on something. What this Civil Defense Service, from what I got of the video, is suggesting is something that is not new and is practiced in several other countries. Israel has a more hard-core form of it in its mandatory armed services training. There is nothing wrong with service for one’s country. Civil Defense training would create a population that was more aware of its community, educate people on proper use of firearms (I have always thought everyone should know how to clean and operate a firearm even if you choose to not own one, if for nothing else than your own safety should you ever be in a situation where you might need to, God forbid), and give people a higher sense of serving the country that keeps them safe and free. Nowhere in this video does it mention mandatory continued service or that you would be obligated to go to war and certainly this video never makes mention of a paramilitary organization. You get trained and go home and continue your normal life.
Now to address the comments above me. All of you who are making an analogy to Nazism are only displaying your ignorance of history. I was a history major who specialized on WWII and took my senior thesis class on the rise of Nazi Germany. True, the formation of a Civil Defense Service could feasibly transform into a group likened to the Hitler Youth (SS and Gestapo were something completely different which were not mandatory to join). But this transformation would require a dictator and a public willing to give up its freedom, neither of which do I see in the America I love. However, Barack has pulled the wool over much of America’s eyes these past few months, which I still can only attribute to the terrible media system we have in this country, both left wing and right. His charisma and promise of “change” can be likened to Hitler’s promises in 1933. Hitler rose to power in a time of depression, similar, but far worse than the economic circumstances America is currently in and it was Hitler’s NSDP (National Socialist Democratic Party) who helped to keep the economy stagnant while pinning the nation’s troubles on his predecessor. (starting to sounds familiar? if not, know that America’s economy was slowing during Bush’s administration, but that was largely due to the natural economic cycle of busts and booms that occurs now on a period of about every 10 years (Clinton got lucky, landed on a boom, Bush, unlucky). However the nation was still experiencing economic growth until 2007, despite claims that America was in a recession before that (a recession is technically a period in which economic growth becomes negative). Now, what happened in 2006? The Democrats gained control of the Senate and began creating incentives for banks to hand out sub-prime loans and toxic mortgages so these people could buy homes that were outside their means. When these people who decided it would be fun to borrow money and buy homes they couldn’t afford started to declare bankruptcy and their mortgages were bought up, torn apart, and sold off a toxic debt that the economy first officially entered a recession. Now honestly, I have to give Barack and the Democratic Party their due. Their ability to convince the American public that all of their troubles were not only solely Bush’s fault but that electing John McCain would be the equivalent of electing Bush to a 3rd term AND their only way to fix America was to hand over power to a Democratic president, Senate, AND Congress, the same Congress which allowed the first recession in 20 years, is truly beyond my comprehension.(don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t the best president, but he did manage to prevent a single terrorist act on any American soil either home or abroad for 6 1/2 years and while he had the support of Congress he kept our economy in a state of positive growth even if he did incur a tremendous amount of debt in order to do so.)But if there is one thing we can learn from history, its that a charismatic speaker and the promise of change is a very powerful way to gain the people’s trust without having to earn it first.) But I’m getting off track, to those who would compare this Civil Defense Service to Nazism and Hitler, you may be correct, only time can tell, but you would be correct for the wrong reasons. The Civil Defense Service, much like a gun, is not dangerous in itself and can in fact be used for good, it is the hands in which it is placed and where it is aimed will determine the efficacy of a CDS, or a gun.
I thank those of you who read this long and to end this brief lesson in history, I will say that as of right now I believe that Barack is a good man, has honorable intentions for the future of this country, and I will respect him as my President, even if i severely disagree with his economic policies. But I could be wrong, and maybe his similarities to a man 70 years ago aren’t just a coincidence, so until then, I welcome a CDS so at least I’ll be trained to fight back in the case that he and this country does lose its way.
(P.S.- There should be exceptions for mandatory service: have a family that requires you to work, disability, etc. Even conscientious objectors could give 3 months service in a field that doesn’t involve Defense training.)

Hey guys, ok so first off you people really need to do some research before posting things. Secondly, there is no way that this could go through do to what it would cost. The only real way to pull something like this off would be to have it as part of school curriculum, this is not forcing anyone to join the army and this is not a draft. This would be more so a way to prepare people if there were another attack on our shores. We used to have militias in almost every town but not anymore, this would be the same thing with a different name.

This country needs to teach kids more than math and science. Three months of civic training, hands on kinda work, isn’t a bad thing. It is a patriotic thing. Supporting your country is more than flag waving and magnets on your car.
I would be glad to do something like this. Yes I could go out and find a place to do some work, but I am a lazy college student. I should get kicked in the rear and made to invest in my country.
My generation knows nothing of public service. The pot smoking art school kid (me) should be up in arms about this “you can’t MAKE me do this” I should say. I’ll bet some of you were quick to point out that Obama was un-american or un-patriotic. Now that there is a hint that you MIGHT have to do some mandatory civic work (90 days over SEVEN years…) you grab the pitch forks.

If it was instituted, and I doubt very much that it would be anytime soon, it would be the best thing done for this country in years. What is a couple of months from a generation that has never given up ANY comfort for the way they live. Our grandparents are called “The Greatest Generation” for a reason. You guys want to go on about how dangerous the world is and that it is coming to our doorstep but you are unwilling to do anything about it. There are so many countries that already require their young people to give back to the nation. I some countries you can choose between defense training or community service. I think most people, at least those who aren’t obsessed with killing people who look different, would choose to help build houses for the poor, or volunteer in other community building ways. I know the rich people of this country don’t want to work, but that’s because they’re afraid if they have to help the poor, either through mandatory service or by giving away some of their precious dollars, they might have to start thinking about the poor and how unfair the system is, and how they are the sleazes at the top. Or worse, it might make them less rich! Oh no!
Also, I’m so confused about people talking about Barack as a fascist. For 8 years we watched a president strip us of our constitutional rights, spy on innocent Americans, and fight an obscenely expensive war that was pointless and deadly for who knows how many innocent Iraquis. not to mention our own men and women who have been dying or getting maimed for false pretenses. But as soon as Obama or his advisors suggest doing something to help out the poor and impoverished in this nation, everyone start calling him a fascist. It makes no sense, and that’s why I’m leaving this country. There are too many people, on both sides, who are so wrapped up in the love of money that has overtaken the US population that I don’t think it is salvagable.
If there is something instituted where my lazy, facbooking generation is forced to go out in their community and help their fellow men and women, then maybe I’ll come back. Because it’s not money that makes people happy, it’s service. And I don’t mean firing a gun.

Look, I voted for the guy, but if he becomes a dictator, you have my word that I will be on the front lines of a revolution if he does become a dictator. The idea of a well-regulated militia, being necessary for the free state (where have I heard that before?) like Obama is proposing is NOT an SS or Gestapo style military police. Quite the opposite, it is localized community defense militia, which is the foundation of the army that fought the War of Independence.
I honestly don’t like the idea, and I don’t think the legislation will pass, but it’s not what you’re making it out to be. Did I hear right that you are a journalist? If so, does your editor know that you’re podcasting using the name of your publication for this kind of alarmist quasi-journalism?
I work for a newspaper as a fact-checker, and if you brought this piece to me, I’d tear it shreds. The only research you did was pull two 30-second clips from youtube. Perhaps for a more convincing argument for someone other terrified racist right-wingers would be to produce facts, actual legislation or parameters which may be included in that legislation … something other than alarming soundbites.
Honestly, I hope you get back to me on my e-mail. I check it every day. If you can’t provide sources and facts to back up your comparison of President Obama to Hitlet, I hope you’ll take this video down, or at least re-edit it to resemble responsible journalism. I’ll be awaiting your response.

Thanks to Bush and the Patriot Act we now have all the ingredients to make a society similar to Comunist China, The Third Reech or worse.
Let me explain myself: The Patriot Act opened the door for our government to spy on Americans with warrentless phone taps and the ability to investigate anybody who may be deemed a “terrorist” or “threat to national security”. Yet, there has been no clear definition as to what a “terrorist” or “National Threat” really could be. For instance, is a drug dealer a threat to national security? Is a High School kid selling a Joint to a classmate a “Terroristic Act”? How about a civic group that plans to march against the government?
So, with these questions on the table, we now have a leader with Socialistic Tendancies who insists that the general population of our youth be forced to “serve” in Civil Defense activities.
The questions that I have are as follows:
1. What happens to people who refuse to go into the program?
2. If one disagrees with the practices going on in the program will they be considered Enemy’s of the state?
3. Will groups who protest such a mandatory program be considered “Terrorists” where they will be subject to being spied on without warrents?
4. Failure to comply to instructions or orders in such a program will result in what kind of punishment/action?
5. At what point is an enrollee’s actions considered sedition or treason?
Too many unanswered questions. Also, history has shown us that such programs that have been implimented in the past have not shown very good results.

The only times that the government has any right to tell any citizen that he/she HAS to be anywhere they don’t want to be is in time of war or jury duty. The draft is already in place for war as 18 year olds are still required to register. Jurors are obtained from voter lists. Anything else is forced conscription that is in direct vio;ation of the Constitution. I’d love for someone to quote me the lines in the Constitution that would give Obama any right to do anything like this. The Peace Corps and Americorp are all voluntary as is our military. I am a veteran and I would absolutely refuse to do this and would strongly advise my children and grandchildren to refuse anything of the sort. If Obama thinks a civilian service program is a good idea then by all means, establish it, get it up and running and have it voluntary and I bet you’d have millions interested in it. I have nothing against Americans serving their country. You just better not try and FORCE us to do it because we will NOT accept that. So many posters here have noted how many other countries have conscripted forced service to the state. Those comments only reinforce why we are so damn lucky to live in the United States. Since when is Civil Defense a mandtory obligation. As pointed out in many responses, our system is based on a VOLUNTARY system. Whether it is in the Armed Forces or any type of Corps.
Emanuel implied that there would be physical training. Since when does the government have the right to force people to engage in physical fitness.
Requiring individuals to attend “What we call Civil Defense training or Civil Service” sends a chill down my spine, because i don’t know what he means by “WHAT WE CALL!” Exactly who is we?
I have served in our Armed Forces for over 20 years.
One thing I have learned. Forcing someone to do something that they may have done on their own, or have no earthly desire to do in the first place is the worst way to accomplish something.
We have more than enough invested in our true civil defense, we don’t need any other people trying not to trip over other peoples authority.
Oh, and besides war or jury duty, as noted above; PRISON, it the only other place where you are ordered to be against your will!

Shortly after his election, President-elect Obama set up a new website, change.gov, to promote his future agenda. While most of this website contains the usual political jargon about innovative plans and hope, the section on community service has raised quite a few eyebrows. “The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges … Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year…”
You read that correctly. Obama apparently wants to institute forced community service for students from middle school to college.
This may seem too ridiculous to believe. After all, couldn’t this be a mistake made by a webmaster or low-level spokesperson? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Obama’s original plan, found on his campaign website reads, “Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year, and will establish a new tax credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.” Why the change? (pun fully intended) Is this actually the difference between campaign and post-election? Why didn’t the Obama campaign simply copy-and-paste the old text and make a few minor changes? They did, eventually, but not before the blogosphere had gone wild with the issue for 24 hours.
It is possible that this was no simple mistake. Obama’s new chief of staff, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (IL), wants to institute three months of “Universal Civil Defense Training” for college-aged Americans. The general idea is that these trained young people would be able to provide aid in the case of a national disaster. Sounds nice, until you realize that, “It’s required of everybody, 18 to 25, three months.” An interviewer from the New York Daily News discussed the issue with Emanuel, who gave hazy answers on uniforms and barracks. I’m not even kidding, you can listen for yourself on YouTube. He argued that this mandatory service was necessary, “because we have a lot more challenges.”
Simply put, this level of incompetence, if that’s what it is, is completely inexcusable. Either Barack Obama or his staff have problems understanding the principle of liberty. Sarah Palin was ripped for saying she could see Russia from her house. Obama has gotten away, unscathed by the national media, for suggesting the 13th Amendment be nullified.
Obviously, the Obama plan received enough negative press that it had to be altered - or corrected. There is no chance that Obama and the newly elected Democratic Congress could institute mandatory service for America’s youth. The country simply wouldn’t stand for it. However, the fact that such a thing may have been considered by the Obama campaign, and is being considered by Obama’s new chief of staff is, to say the least, extremely disconcerting.

Although the text on Obama’s site does say “require 100 Hours of Service in College”, the description sounds like an offer that can be accepted voluntarily. “Establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year”. Meaning, you have a choice to get a $4,000 tax credit if you decide to do 100 hours of public service.
Also, the portion that suggests students do community service can be compared to co-op learning and practical work experience, which are invaluable. This is in place in many countries and in Canada it is offered as an elective study that is worth credits. Students get the opportunity to work in their field of choice over the course of a semester or school year. It allows the student to formulate an idea of what type of career they would want. It is a great idea, as long as it is voluntary.
The same goes for the civil defense force idea . As long as it is voluntary, then why not (even though I still think it is not a definite part of Obamas plan, especially if it is mandatory, nor would it ever pass if he tried to institute it).

The whole training program isn’t what concerns me. I am more concerned with how it would fit in. Right now I am in an intense 5 year college program, and when i am not in school i am working to pay for school. I am by no means rich so if I want to get my degree I have to work at it, and pay for it myself. The program I am in is also very strict as far as cirriculm, I cant afford to miss a semister of school because i would have to wait a whole year or even restart the program. I can’t afford to do the training over the summer because i have to work. This cycle is going to continue until I have graduated, 5 years from now. Oh and i won’t graduate until after I turn 25. I am sure there are many other students with the same problem. I am not lazy, or selfish, or not patriotic. I am just trying to surrive and make ends meet. Does it matter that I was a boy scout for about 8 years?…

We already have organizations that provide civil defense training and civics training and community service. Think National Guard, ROTC, Boy Scouts of America. All of these organizations have come under attack. ROTC is being kicked OUT of college campuses as we speak.
They’re also hell bent on taking away our right to bear arms and make no secret about it. Why would they train people to clean and use guns when they don’t want civilians to have guns at all?

Volunteering during high school as mandatory is a gray area - it is provided by the public, so technically, it could be mandatory to give back.

To get real,
We as tax payers have provided the public funds. So,nothing has to be to be repaid. As for MANDATORY high school volunteering, no one I KNOW in south east Alabama has to do it.
Believe me, my son WILL NOT BE FORCED to volunteer.
MANDATORY is the OPPOSITE of VOLUNTARY

Has anyone asked what the training is for? Several people have said you go for three months and your done, but I can’t see someone receiving “Boot Camp” training unless they are going to be used.
I am all for a civilian Militia, if its at their own discretion, not forced..
And why do they want to build such an army??
What purpose does it serve??
Probably to control the youth and police the people of the United States in case of a revolution…
Obama has already spoken about a new world order, everyone needs to wake up and see that the change coming is not what was promised.

Believe it or not we are at war Tomasco, you know how we are fighting a war in Afghanistan? The actual war in Iraq may be considered finished but not in Afghanistan. That’s the problem with us Americans today all we do is sit at home and talk about how the whole world is going to shit and that everyone wants to kill us but most people here don’t do anything about it. This Civil Defense Service is not required military service, it’s required training that will only benefit us. I mean free training to learn how to defend ourselves and our country without obligated military service/deployment? Damn sign me up (I’m in the reserves so I don’t need to be signed up) but really this has nothing at all to do with Nazism. And to the Venezuelan kid…this isn’t Venezuela you’re not going to disappear in the middle of the night.

I used to be a Marxist, 30 years ago when I was in college. I studied Marxist Revolutionary tactics and strategy and history.
Obama’s “Civilian Security Force”, “Just as Powerful as the Military”, is not some gentle civilian “Peace Corp”. They are forming the core of a Marxist “People’s Revolutionary Militia”.
It works like this: when this or the next created “crisis” hits, and the mass of dumbed down sheeple is pyschologically indoctrinated, Obama declares Martial Law and suspends the Constitution. When the rural areas erupt into armed opposition, Obama calls out the “People’s Militia” to put down the “Counter Revolutionaries”, that is, you and me. The core of his People’s Militia will be made up mostly of “inner city youth” who allready are violent and alienated from American values. They will be given additional REAL military training, pumped up with fanatical hatred against us, “the oppressors”, weapons, and sent out to do battle with the “Counter Revolutionaries” desperately fighting in the rural areas. Let me tell you this: they won’t be following the Geneva Convention. The remaining “real” Americans, those of us who haven’t been brainwashed, will have to declare “Free American Zones” and then fight bloody guerilla battles that will be awful. There will be atrocities, starvation, possibily foreign invasion as other powers attempt to pick at the dying American corpse.
THAT is what Obama is planning for. They probably aren’t sure if it will be in a year or two or three or five…but…they are working toward it. These plans were all laid out in Bill Ayer’s living room years ago.
Be prepared. Be strong. Do not yield.

The idea of the general public performing a community service to our country and better preparing ourselves for disaster/attack readiness is a great thing. I think it is patriotic to somehow, through military service or community service, give back to our country.
But to make it mandatory, that is where most people get nervous, including myself. I am also in no way implying that the current administration is planning to use us to change our status as a republic, just that they are setting up a loophole that could prove disastrous. How many times over the course of human history have dictators unexpectedly risen to power, without the general public ever even realizing what was happening? What if we put this “force” into effect and nothing happens for 50 years, until we have a person that achieves the unthinkable and gains sole possession over the United States? I don’t need to explain any further, you can take it yourself I’m sure.
If you were to make it a voluntary service, with no ability for it to be used wrongly by doing it correctly the first time, or just not implement it at all, then we would avoid even the smallest chance of, any chance, of us coming to regret it so very much later in our history. Let’s just use some common sense.

I have had everyone from the Florida Supreme Court, The Massachusetts Department of Revenue, The United States Justice Department, The Sergeant at Arms of The United States Senate, The House Of Represntatives, …etc, etc, etc…even had the United States Department of Interior and The United States Justice Department…not to mention the slew of NGO’s and subcontractors for the NSA…
They have been all over me…
Guess they’re looking to fill up their detention centers (or Fusion Centers as they are now called)

ANY time you are forced to do something by ANY government (except being forced to go to jail for hurting someone or stealing their stuff) — c’mon, get real, why not just face it: to the same degree you are forced, you are a slave.
Here’s a question for the obamatrons: how is forced enrollment in ANYTHING any different from being drafted to build a pyramid? (Yeah I can hear you saying, “But this is for the good of our communities, not some pharoah!” Okay, good point. So …. what is preventing you from stepping out your door right now to help your community on your own?

Additionally, everyone KNOWS, or they should via some inner workings within themselves, that this nation is headed toward a CIVIL WAR or a REVOLUTION in a big way.
The ‘PEOPLE’ will get smart and ban together to fight tyranny: THE GOVERNMENT, and we will win… BUT at a high cost as the bloodshed will touch each and every person in America to one degree or another. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WAS BUILT ON REVOLUTION!
Again, all I can say is that I am glad one DAY I WILL DIE and leave this holy hell of a mess hole.

Paul: You are so right, there is no “sense of community among Americans”. And there will not be until we overhaul the federal government. We have made the mistake of becoming the “salad bowl” where every ingredient retains its own integrity, instead of the great “melting pot” where everyone came here to become a US citizen and work together as part of the new nation they wanted to join. I am not saying that you should not be proud of your heritage, just if you want to immigrate to a new country, you should learn the language and learn the laws and work for the unity thereof.
We should raise our children to respect others and do good to all men, but don’t most people already do that. How many people say “Hmm, I think I’ll go have me and kid….and ummm, ohh let’s see make him a rapist/murderer/unibomber”…. My son is an Eagle Scout. Many hours of hard work and determination is required to earn this rank, and yes, community service is required for it. Difference, he wanted to be an Eagle; it was not forced down his throat. Also, our Church performs many acts of community service and outreach each year; difference, it is voluntary and guided by the Lord’s example, not dictated by the President. And before you go calling me racist, if I were a canine, my papers would say Heinz 57. I am a mix of many cultures and races.

And by the way, I am just so tired of everyone pointing fingers and calling others “racist” just b/c they don’t like or did not vote for Obama. Maybe the shoe is on the other foot. All those who voted for him are guilty of “reverse discrimination”. Just a thought.
Another little side note: before integration, neither side would have laid claim to a mixed child. In some states, a child’s race is listed as his mother’s race; that would effectively have made Obama white had he been born in one of those states.
