The SavedShared division of an analytics company called A.H.F. is releasing an interesting study done over a period of 2 weeks in New York and Florida.  The study had originated in a survey and study of distractions that affect drivers  in the New York City office of the company Abrams, Herzog and Filippi. That study was for a major media organization.

Something Odd But It Is Human Nature

In April after just 10 minutes of doing a visual survey of drivers for the Driver Distraction Data, the employee noticed something odd.  From his vantage point on Main Street in a neighborhood called Brooklyn Heights at the cross section of Washington he noticed something that one would normally not even think of.

What Distracts Drivers Is More Interesting Than First Thought

After taking a number of photos of drivers for the study the rather large number of male drivers with one hand on their laps that was also not stationary perplexed the employee.  A light bulb lit in the man’s head and he submitted to the supervisor his idea. A week later a study was commissioned in two states.  After 2 weeks and 4634 cars (with 340 photos taken of the driver’s laps) it was evident when the numbers were crunched that nearly 11% of male drivers were doing something with one hand that perhaps they should not be doing while driving.

11% of Male Drivers Under 30 Are Paying More Attention To their Privates Than Driving

Abrams, Herzog and Filippi is a private data polling and mining firm that does major polling and studies for organizations around the United States. In fact you’ve probably read their polls that are released under contract by other media groups that you might see on the major broadcast stations or in papers.

“When this idea was presented it was thought of as a complete joke” said Stuart Arnett, the supervisor who ran the study and data at A.H.F.

“But Since we were already doing a study on driver distractions we figured let’s include the data and just extend the study to see where this goes.

I had to authorize it after looking at over 50 photos of male drivers who were all moving their hands a bit too much on their laps” said Arnett.

Where it went surprised the whole organization

11% of Male Drivers not only had one hand on their crotch area but at the stop sign at one location and a red light at two others from New York to Florida, they were moving a bit too much.

“We polled our own employees and not one male employee would admit to doing this while driving.  This made the study even more interesting as how else would the data be collected other than by photographing the movements at the intersections where we set up the study. It was thought of as slightly unethical but we went out of our way to make sure none of the  photos with any chance of identifying the drivers would ever be made public. It would leave the company open to lawsuits” said Mr. Arnett. ”

They Questioned Releasing The Data

When the study was completed the breakdown of the data was as follows:

Of the under 30 year old males who were photographed and/or had activities logged:

11% had one hand on their crotches (204 photos taken in New York City in two locations, one in Brooklyn in Brooklyn Heights and the other on 5th Avenue in NYC.  136 Photos taken in Pompano Beach Florida.  Video archived for study has 12 hours with 8 taken in New York and 4 hours of video in Florida.

9% had both hands on the wheel

9% were adjusting the Radio/CD player

29% had the other hand on their thighs.

2% had their hand on the stick shift or automatic shift

1% had their hand under an object but on their laps covering the crotch area

8% had one hand on the adjacent seat extended or the panel next to their seat.

31% had their non-driving hand on their iPod, or cell of other mobile device

What this All Means?

Other than human nature all it can mean is that our young male population enjoys touching themselves at an alarming rate while driving.

“There are no statistics to show how many accidents occur due to this activity as no one would ever admit to this to a police officer.” (From Study)

Other excuses are made as we know of no reports where a driver ever admitted to doing this. In terms of driver distractions what could be distracting that raging hormones and a male touching themselves?  We would think this is far more of a distraction while driving than say simply adjusting the radio.

While we have proudly maintained our membership for several years and have long admired the AARP goals and principles, regrettably, we can no longer endorse it’s abdication of our values. Your letter specifically stated that we can count on AARP to speak up for our rights, yet the voice we hear is not ours. Your offer of being kept up to date on important issues through DIVIDED WE FAIL presents neither an impartial view nor the one we have come to embrace. We do believe that when two parties agree all the time on everything presented to them, one is probably not necessary. But, when the opinions and long term goals are diametrically opposed, the divorce is imminent. This is the philosophy, which spawned our 200 years of government.

Once upon a time, we looked forward to being part of the senior demographic. We also looked to AARP to provide certain benefits and give our voice a power we could not possibly hope to achieve on our own. AARP gave us a sense of belonging, which we no longer enjoy. The Socialist politics practiced by the Obama administration and empowered by AARP serves only to raise the blood pressure my medical insurance strives to contain. Clearly a conflict of interest there!

We do not understand the AARP posture, feel greatly betrayed by the guiding forces that we expected to map out our senior years and leave your ranks with a great sense of regret. We mitigate that disappointment with the relief of knowing that we are not contributing to the problem anymore by renewing our membership. There are numerous other organizations, which offer discounts without threatening our way of life or offending our sensibilities.

This Presidential Administration scares the living daylights out of us. Not just for ourselves, but for our proud and bloodstained heritage. But even more importantly for our children and grandchildren. Washington has rendered Soylent Green a prophetic cautionary tale rather than a nonfiction scare tactic. I have never in my life endorsed any militant or radical groups, yet now I find myself listening to them. I don’t have to agree with them to appreciate the fear which birthed their existence. Their borderline insanity presents little more than a balance to the voice of the Socialist mindset in power. Perhaps I became American by a great stroke of luck in some cosmic uterine lottery, but in my adulthood I CHOOSE to embrace it and nurture the freedoms it represents as well as the responsibilities it requires.

Your website generously offers us the opportunity to receive all communication in Spanish. ARE YOU KIDDING? Someone has broken into our ‘house’, invaded our home without our invitation or consent. The President has insisted we keep the perpetrator in comfort and learn the perp language so we can communicate our reluctant welcome to them.

I DON’T choose to welcome them.

America on the Precipice

America is on the precipice and no one likes where we are.  Mr. President if you can hear me understand that you are not God. You will never be God so please stop acting like you are.  It is not funny in the least that tomorrow I have to tell my employees that we must lower salaries further in order to survive. I co-own a small firm that helps small businesses and you and your party, Mr. President have made it nearly impossible for us to survive. These hundreds of clients of our firm say the same thing and they are in nearly every state.

You are destroying small business Mr. President at an alarming rate.

It isn’t enough that you know absolutely nothing about the economy. The Media will not blame you as you and your entire staff have the lowest private sector experience of any administration in history.  But I do. Why do I and businessmen and women all over America blame you and your Democratic allies?

• I blame you for not understanding what an S Corporation is and how your lies about the Bush Tax cuts hurt the nearly 60% of small businesses that happen to be S Corporations . You see lesson one for you Mr. President is income passes directly through to the owners so when you tax us you hurt all employees and make it impossible for us to hire.  Or as in our case we must now downsize and lower salaries.  Most small businesses in America are S Corporations Mr. President.  You are robbing us all in just 2 weeks Sir. That is when the supposed evil Bush tax cuts for the rich end. I am not rich and neither are my employees that you are hurting directly.  They are all catching on and fast. See NCPA Analysis

But let’s forget about your economic ignorance as to how most businesses are even organized in America. And I can’t believe that you really don’t know this. In fact I’m sure you do.

You now are attempting to pass Health Care Reform.

Something is wrong in Washington D.C. when those in power are now actively trying to use fake science to impose more taxation and control over our lives. WHEREAS, The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States reads: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people”; and

WHEREAS, The Tenth Amendment defines the total scope of federal power as being that specifically granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States and no more; and

WHEREAS, The scope of power defined by the Tenth Amendment signifies that the federal government was created by the states specifically to be an agent of the states; and

WHEREAS, Today, in 2009, the states are often treated as agents of the federal government; and

WHEREAS, Many federal laws directly contravene the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States; and

WHEREAS, We believe in the importance of all levels of government working together to serve the citizens of our country, by respecting the constitutional provisions that properly delineate the authority of federal, state, and local governments; and

WHEREAS, The Tenth Amendment assures that we, the people of the United States and each sovereign state in the Union of States, now have, and have always had, rights the federal government may not usurp; and

WHEREAS, Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States, states in part, “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,” and the Ninth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States states that “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people”; and

WHEREAS, The United States Supreme Court ruled in New York v. United States, 505 U.S. 144 (1992), that Congress may not simply commandeer the legislative and regulatory processes of the states by compelling them to enact and enforce regulatory programs; and

WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court, in Printz v. United States/Mack v. United States, 521 U.S. 898 (1997), reaffirmed that the Constitution of the United States established a system of “dual sovereignty” that retains “a residuary and inviolable sovereignty” by the states. The majority of the United States Supreme Court noted in that case (521 U.S. 898, 921-922):

“As [President] Madison expressed it: ‘[T]he local or municipal authorities form distinct and independent portions of the supremacy, no more subject, within their respective spheres, to the general authority than the general authority is subject to them, within its own sphere.’ The Federalist No. 39, at 245.

This separation of the two spheres is one of the Constitution’s structural protections of liberty. ‘Just as the separation and independence of the coordinate branches of the Federal Government serve to prevent the accumulation of excessive power in any one branch, a healthy balance of power between the States and the Federal Government will reduce the risk of tyranny and abuse from either front.’ . . . To quote [President] Madison once again:

‘In the compound republic of America, the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two distinct governments, and then the portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments. Hence a double security arises to the rights of the people. The different governments will control each other, at the same time that each will be controlled by itself.’ The Federalist No. 51, at 323″; and

WHEREAS, A number of proposals by previous administrations, some now pending proposals by the present administration, and some proposals by Congress may further violate the Tenth Amendment restriction on the scope of federal power; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the State of Ohio hereby acknowledges and reaffirms its residuary and inviolable sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this resolution serves as notice to the federal government as agent of the states, to end federal mandates that are beyond the scope of the constitutionally delegated powers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That all compulsory federal legislation that directs states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalty or sanction or that requires states to enact legislation or lose federal funding be prohibited or repealed; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit authenticated copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate of each state’s legislature, and each member of the Ohio Congressional delegation.
