Creating your blog and having an idea for it seems to me to be the very first step on your road to blogging and social media success. There is an old wise saying that goes ‘If you don’t know where you are going, how will you get there?’. This is as true for blogging and success as it is for creating and coming up with an idea or theme or niche for your blog.
Blog Niche/Specialization or not?
Jonathan Fields has a great article called To Niche or not to niche: Top bloggers tell all
In it he asks a few of the top bloggers if they need a niche or specialization, or if blogging on general topics was a smart idea.
To me it seems that everything depends on the success of the blog. There are successful bloggers with general blogs and others with niche blogs. One blog I enjoy is http://onemansblog.com/ – which proudly states that ‘Specialization is for insects”.
In my humble opinion do what you want to do, but heed the advice of those who are successful. Seth Godin is one of the most successful people on the internet and in advertising. He simply thinks that you should keep to one story per post, but you can play the field. John Chow would agree as he loves the idea of larger blogs and sites and is in the camp of those who feel that larger more diverse sites do better over time.
