For the ordinary layman hearing about communion cups, the first thing that comes to mind is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Pop culture has greatly influenced us by signifying some of the most revered religious artifacts in a very unorthodox manner. However, the good thing with this is that they have also brought the spotlight on these items and helped people get acquainted with them. In the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana is hunting for what people revere as the ultimate communion cup, the Holy Grail. In most literary works, you will find that the Holy Grail came to be portrayed as the cup that Christ had used; this also stood for the plate and dish that was used in the Last Supper he had with his disciples. Throughout centuries, this Holy Grail came to be represented as a communion cup that we are now familiar with. Of course, even if people are familiar with it, the usage of communion cups varies all over the world. Most cups are also created using different materials depending on the country and people that are using it. As an example, the Christian peasants that are from Mexico create cups using baked clay while Christian Palestinians create cups with the use of olive wood. No matter what communion cups are made for, they serve one major purpose, and that is to symbolize the faith that people have in Christ. Some small churches still go for glass cups, but it can take up time since they require washing and cleaning up. Thus, plastic communion cups are deemed more favorable by most big churches. As mentioned, the Holy Grail or Chalice is celebrated as one of the most sacred vessels in the Church and it is often blessed prior to using it. Even if the Bible does not offer the cup during the Last Supper dinner or make any significance about it, believers still uphold it as a sacred item. Pilgrims in Jerusalem believed that another significant cup was still venerated in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It supposedly contained the sponge that was used by Christ at Calvary. This was apart from the tradition and belief surrounding the cup from the last supper. Out of this faith came the belief in the legends of the cup, from Indiana Jones to Merlin and Dan Brown, the story of the ultimate Communion Cup or the Holy Grail is still alive and celebrated. This is thought to be the cup that was used by Christ in his crucifixion in Calvary and still supposedly contains that sponge that he used. This is of course, different from the cup and tradition surrounding the cup from the Last Supper. You can also take review on our Church Bulletins.
